چکیده

Carbon cycling pathways in lacustrine systems are complex because there are often multiple sources of organic carbon available to the food webs. Among the techniques used to delineate carbon flows from organic matter to consumers, stable isotope analysis may be the most powerful one because isotope compositions of consumers reflect those of the dietary carbon assimilated and incorporated into their tissues and because no system manipulation is involved. The use of stable carbon isotopes in food web study is based on these premises: (1) there is a broad isotope range among different sources of organic matter (Peterson and Fry, 1987) and (2) consumer ODC closely resembles their diets within 1%0 (DeNiro and Epstein, 1978). Stable isotope analysis has been successfully applied to the investigations of carbon flows in some lacustrine food webs (e.g., Hecky and Hesslein, 1995). .The objective of this study was to determine carbon sources that supported the food webs of lakes Apopka and Okahumpka, Florida, phytoplanktonand macrophyte-dominated systems, respectively. We used stable carbon isotopes as natural tracers to illustrate carbon flows in each food web.

Assessing the Utility of Hydrogen, Carbon and Nitrogen Stable Isotopes in Estimating Consumer Allochthony in Two Shallow Eutrophic Lakes

Hydrogen stable isotopes (δ2H) have recently been used to complement δ13C and δ15N in food web studies due to their potentially greater power to separate sources of organic matter in aquatic food webs. However, uncertainties remain regarding the use of δ2H, since little is known about the potential variation in the amount of exchangeable hydrogen (Hex) among common sample materials or the patte...

Tourists increase the contribution of autochthonous carbon to littoral zone food webs in oligotrophic dune lakes

Tourists can adversely influence the ecology of oligotrophic lakes by increasing algal production via direct nutrient inputs and/or re-suspension of sediments. To assess the influence of tourists on food web dynamics, we used natural abundance stable isotopes of carbon and nitrogen to calculate the relative importance of autochthonous and allochthonous carbon sources to littoral zone food webs ...

Evidence supporting the importance of terrestrial carbon in a large-river food web.

Algal carbon has been increasingly recognized as the primary carbon source supporting large-river food webs; however, many of the studies that support this contention have focused on lotic main channels during low-flow periods. The flow variability and habitat-heterogeneity characteristic of these systems has the potential to significantly influence food web structure and must be integrated int...

Use of Multi-Carbon Sources by Zooplankton in an Oligotrophic Lake in the Tibetan Plateau

We applied natural abundance stable isotope δ13C and radiocarbon ∆14C analyses to investigate trophic linkages between zooplankton and their potential food sources (phytoplankton, submersed plants, and allochthonous organic carbon) in Lake Nam Co, one of the largest oligosaline and oligotrophic lakes in the Tibetan Plateau, in south-west China. The δ13C and ∆14C levels of the calanoid copepod A...

Stable Isotope Application in Animal Nutrition Science

The application of stable isotope analysis (SIA) has become a standard scientific approach in Agricultural and Ecological researches and, more in general, in several disciplines such as biology, botany, zoology, organic chemistry, climatology, and nutrition. The main objectives of this paper are (1) to provide a simple definition of stable isotopes and (2) to illustrate analytical measurement m...
